A FANTASTIC season for the woman at Hexham Golf Club culminated in the capture of the Norah Percy Trophy.

Weeks on from the club winning the top division of the Northumberland League, they earned the cup for 29 to 36 handicappers with a resounding 5-0 win over Morpeth in the final.

The team of Margaret Dowdeswell, Judy Oakley, Jenny Banks, Anne Thompson and Elaine Oakley kept their nerve to clinch yet more silverware for the ladies’ section.

It brings a great year for the women to a close, teams finishing runners-up in both divisions three and four to go with the Division One triumph.

Captain Anne Moyle has been overjoyed with the support for the section, with 48 females used throughout competitions this year.

She said: “It has been a fantastic team effort by everybody this year, and there is nobody you can pick out as carrying the teams.

“They all pulled together and showed great team spirit, and that is why the section is going from strength-to-strength.”

As the season draws to a close, there has been plenty of action at the club with Mary Oliver (36) edging Division One of the Lady President’s Day on countback from Paula Forster (36). Susan Turner (32) was third.

It was a similar story in Division Two as Sheila Bell’s (36) performance over the back nine earned her the glory ahead of Janet Purdy (36). Jennifer Herrmann (33) was third.

Sticking to the theme, Anne Thompson (30) won Division Three on countback from Fiona Kelsey (30). Third was Christine Phillips (28).

Margaret Montgomery was the winner of the nine-hole competition, while Carol Newton recorded nearest the pin on the second hole and Fiona Kelsey was nearest the line on the 18th.

Laura Johnson (85-12-73) won Division One of the Medal 7, with Christine Lees (93-17-76) runner-up. Jennifer Herrmann (100-27-73) triumphed in Division Two, ahead of Elinor Hinds (107-30-77).

Meanwhile, the men contested three KO competitions recently which all had enthralling finishes.

After a bad start which saw them fall behind to father and son team Stephen and Jamie Brown, Andy Crawford and Graham Butterfield fought back from the 13th hole onwards to win the 18-hole Corbridge Cup final 2&1.

The final of the 36-hole, singles Bell Cup competition was close fought until Kim Steward forged ahead to win the last three holes of the morning round. He eventually extended this lead into the afternoon to beat David Donaldson 6&5.

The final of the 36-hole Laing Trophy between Ross Donaldson and Simon Clayton-Hibbitt was all square at the halfway point and it remained that way until a string of great shots earned Ross the victory at 4&3.
