THE competition was so close at this year's Tynedale Hockey Family Tournament, that both finals went to penalties.

In fact, the two teams in the final of the Shield competition couldn't even be separated by a shoot-out, which resulted in the team finishing top of the round robin league being awarded the trophy.

The tournament attracted more than 100 people, with 59 players in the Shield for inexperienced adults and U13 juniors, and 50 in the Cup equivalent for club players and U16 juniors.

The seven-a-side matches required at least four juniors to be on the pitch at any one time.

And after a very close final, the team of two sets of mothers and daughters (Olivia and Vicky Bell, and Lucy and Kerry Stith), two sets of mothers and sons (James and Clare Youngman, and Hugo and Niki McNichol), and captain Martha Anderson and Sam Hindmarch, were awarded the prize.

Captained by Angus Brook and represented by fellow club members Sue Crawford, Alex Proud and John Robson alongside juniors Tom Drake, Oliver Christer, Jacob Smith and Finn Amsdon, the winners of the cup had to go to penalties to secure the victory.

Former president of Northumbeland Hockey Association, Billie Turnbull, a fine left wing in her day, handed over the trophies and medals.
