TWO teenage rowers from Queen Elizabeth High School have gained selection for England following gold at the British Championships.

QE Rowing Club members Milly Dickinson and Amy Bowman (right) have secured a vest to represent their nation in the upcoming Home Countries match following an impressive win in the junior pairs on the national stage.

Selection for Milly was already in the bag following excellent displays at a recent GB final trials over four days.

But selectors offered Amy the opportunity to join her clubmate after the two pulled back nearly a two length deficit in the final 250m to beat Norwich by just 0.1 seconds in an exciting national final.

The pair were in the medals in the Glasgow championships elsewhere too, joining Lucy Ryan and Harriet Aubrook in the junior women coxless four which earned a bronze with a gutsy display.

The day wasn’t over for Lucy who secured ninth from 42 entries in the single sculls.

QE took a huge squad of 41 to the event, and the J14 boys of Tom Archer, Michael Watts, Tom Smith, Harry Andersen and cox Andrew Watson claimed fifth spot.

Two J14 girls’ crews were entered, and the team of Briony Lucas, Mhairi Shearer, Millie Frear, Laurie Steele and cox Lauren Barnes just edged out QE rivals Ellie Dodd, India Berry, Rosie Mitchell, Olivia Graham and cox Phoebe Forster into 13th spot.

The J15 girls of Bethany Hickling, Tilly Marples, Sophie Speed, Fran Harrison and cox Megan Forster did well to finish in the top 10. Nicky Ryan, James Scott, Robbie Langford, Hexham Rowing Club member Jack Curtis and cox Dominic Kathiravel earned 12th spot.

With second place in the repecharge, the J16 women’s coxed four of Jenny Holmes, Abigail Thomson, Lexi Howard, Chloe Smith and cox Eleanor Holmes finished in sixth place.

The newly formed WJ16 pair of Helena Forster and Sophie Lynch showed improvement despite their lack of expeience.

A lack of senior boys forced QE to mix J16 Tom Barnes with J17 Dan Armstrong, but the youngsters struggled in the J18 doubles before finishing sixth in the C final.

In his last outing for QE as he plans to move onto the Leander development squad, things didn‘t go to plan for Jordan Henderson in the J18 single sculls as he finished 32nd from 51 entries.
