TYNEDALE pupils figured heavily in the top three at the Northumberland Schools Athletic Association Minors Indoor Championships.

Prudhoe’s Highfield Middle, Ovingham Middle and Haydon Bridge High schools all produced top performers during an impressive showing at Gateshead International Stadium.

In an event aimed at Year 7 and 8 pupils only, Ovingham pupils Kate Smith and Sam Irons led the way with multiple golds. Kate ended with three titles in the Year 8 long jump (4.51m), 60m (8.5s) and 60m hurdles (10.2s), with Sam winning both the Year 8 long jump (4.51m) and 60m (8.1s).

Zak won the Year 7 shot putt with a distance of 6.74m and Lucy the Year 7 60m hurdles (12.1s).

Anya leapt her way to gold in the Year 7 high jump by clearing 1.15m. Anya was denied a second gold in the 60m too despite recording the same time (9.1s) as the champion. Ovingham brothers Rhys and Ellis Findlay were similarly denied first place on knock backs after matching the achievements of the victors, Rhys coming second in the Year 8 high jump (1.35m) and Ellis runner-up in the Year 7 60m (8.9s).

Jack Swinburn, of Highfield, cleared a winning height of 1.35m in the Year 8 high jump but had to settle for third place after knock backs.

Haydon Bridge ended in the honours too as Eleanor Sowerby, setting two new school records in the process, threw a distance of 6.54m in the Year 7 shot putt for second place, while Rhea Atkinson claimed third in the Year 7 high jump with a height of 1.10m.
