TYNE Valley driver Matty Graham enjoyed his 'best weekend of his racing career' at the weekend.

Continuing his impressive form which has seen him claim two podium places in his past three races, the Stamfordham-based 21-year-old claimed a brace of wins in the British GT Championships, when he headed to Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium.

Comfortably the fastest driver in every session he ran in Ebor GT team's Maserati GranTurismo GT4, he did have to overcome obstacles over the weekend with a mechanical problem ahead of qualifying forcing him and teammate Charlie Fagg out of the grid setting sessions on the opening day.

The weekend started superbly for the former U18 World Karting champion, formerly of Edmundbyers, as he lapped the Belgian track over a second clear of his next rival in first practice, and he did the same again after just three laps in the second.

This allowed him to give rookie teammate Fagg (17) to make up nine places in the opening two laps in the race one, handing over to Graham who scythed his way through the field with ease to work his way up to fifth place as the race drew to a close.

He was then part of a four-car train battling for second place until the race leader suffered a puncture, and Graham prevailed to take an unlikely victory in the final lap.

His performance in the second race was even more impressive as he charged from last place to an eight-second lead.

It took just six laps to move from 29th to second, and he made light work of the leader to then build a handsome margin ahead of handing over to Fagg.

The work of Graham had laid great foundations for his young driving partner and allowed him to maintain the challenge, the combined efforts of both drivers seeing them claim a dominant win by 35 seconds.

The pair of victories means that Graham, who only made the switch to GT racing in 2016, has now finished on the podium in eight of the 14 races he has entered, building on his reputation as one of the best young drivers in the country.
