WITH the stand-out performance of the championships, an Ovingham Middle School pupil sprinted his way to two inter county titles.

Despite racing a year younger than the rest of the competition, hot prospect Lewis Cant (13), of Prudhoe, put in impressive displays to win both the junior boys' 100m and 200m events at the Northern Inter County Schools Track and Field Championships.

His times have caught the eyes of the selectors and he has earned qualification in the 100m and 4x100m relay for the prestigious English Schools final when it heads to Gateshead International Stadium on July 8 and 9.

Lewis went into the inter counties contest in Middlesbrough as county champion in both events, and he blitzed the opposition again to leave with the fantastic double. He ran a time of 11.8 seconds to win the 100m and followed it up with a winning time of 24.4 in the 200m.

The Blaydon Harrier said: "There was a guy in the race who had faster times than me, so I thought he would win it! So I was pleased to win, especially as it was against the year above.

"I'm just going to ran as fast as I can at English Schools. I am hoping to medal but I don't think I will."

Lewis was just one of the Tynedale schoolchildren who helped Northumberland to the overall teams title over their rivals from Durham, Cleveland an Cumbria.

Repeating her triumph in the Northumberland final, Robyn Bennett claimed gold from a field of four in the intermediate girls' 3000m with a time of 11:02.3.

Queen Elizabeth High School pupil Jack Colmer left with two titles, the only representative in the triple jump (12.89m) but heading a field of three to take the long jump (6.24m) in style. However, scores from the seniors weren't added to the team score.

There was another inter county champion from Tynedale as Corbridge resident Daniel Joyce (2:07.0) won gold for Durham in the junior boys' 800m, which featured fifth placed Ben Dykins (2:12.2), of Tynedale Harriers but a schoolboy in Newcastle.

Just missing out on gold in the county final, Ellis Leonard (1.7m) again had to settle for second place as he pushed for top honours in the intermediate boys' high jump.

Rachel Forster (1.51) was second in the girls' equivalent, while Ellen Ricketts (44.0) was third in the intermediate girls' 300m.

Ben Robson (11.63m) just missed out on a top three place in the junior boys' hammer, with Paddy Lally (5:59.0) likewise missing out in the intermediate boys' 1500m steeplechase.

Eleanor Colmer (9.89m) was fourth in the intermediate girls' triple jump, and was sixth in the long jump (4.44m), one place behind fellow Tynedale jumper Ellen Ricketts (4.71m).

Out of the medals but still impressing to get so far, there were a number of other Tynedale athletes on show.

Chloe Wellings (5:14.7) was fifth in the junior girls' 1500m, while Louise Smith (4.63m) was sixth in the long jump.
