WITH little separating the top three, a Hexham junior’s performance on the back nine earned him a slender victory.

Robert Henderson (81-15-66) edged his way to success in the Hexham Youth Open, just finishing ahead of clubmate Finn McKendrick (76-10-66) and third placed Jack Naughton (84-18-66), of Matfen Hall.

Runner-up Finn didn’t leave empty handed, though, as he returned with the trophy for the best gross score of 76.

Fellow Hexham member Will Shrimpton recorded the longest drive on the 14th, while Matfen’s Angus Buchanan was nearest the pin on the 13th.

With a fantastic second round of 67, Christine Phillips (142) won the club’s Chronicle Cup. She was tied with eventual runner-up Marie Browne (75, 75) after the first round, but finished eight strokes better off after a great second day.

Christine (102-33-69) enjoyed further success when she won Division Two of the Medal 5, finishing ahead of Elinor Hinds (105-30-75).

Laura Johnson (87-12-75) excelled over the back nine for glory in Division One, edging out Marie Browne (84-9-75).

The McIntyre Trophy was even more closely fought with victor Sue Crawford (38) separated from the top three on countback. Both Fiona Harrison (38) and June Lomax (38) pushed her all the way for top spot.

Club pro Andy Paisley’s golf day was well supported and past captain Kim Steward (38) claimed top honours.

But the championship was decided on countback after the top three all carded 38 points, club champion Mark Dryden (38) second and Mike Ridley (38) third. The ladies’ champion was Yvonne Reekie (37).

Andrew Digirolamo (38) won Division One of the Thrudsday Stableford ahead of Stephen Sisterson (36) and Ross Donaldson (35).

Division Two was won by Geoffrey Harrison (41), with Antonio Digirolamo (36) second and John Fraser (35) third.

There was a double success for Stephen Charteries at Haltwhistle .

For he followed up victory in the Travellers Trophy, played at Appleby Golf Club, with team glory in the WE Barnes Open at the club the following day.

Charteries’ weekend started with individual success, his score of 35 points just shading out runner-up Duncan Wren (35), with Geoff Mortimore (33) claiming third spot.

He then joined forces with Steven Baty and Michael Parker (86) to triumph in the WE Barnes, finishing ahead of Alan Payne and Geoff Baston snr and jnr (83) and Keith Mather, Chris Anson and Richard Watters (83).

Also winning two competitions this weekend was Bellingham’s promising junior Jack Johnstone, lifting the club’s Rose Bowl and then topping the sixth round of the Centenary Scratch Trophy.

His score of 67-4-63 earned him the bowl ahead of Jim Henderson (91-24-67) and Kieran MacLaren (73-5-67), with his 67 points seeing him to success in the scratch competition with Kieran MacLaren (73) and Michael King (74) making up the top three.

Chris Murphy (36) retained the Gents’ Captain’s Away Day Trophy when members headed to Whitley Bay, finishing just ahead of the captain himself, Michael Davison (35). Bob Simpson (33) was third.

Alec Jones (37) won the latest Stableford Cup qualifier, followed by Mark Walton (35) and Paul Richardson (35), who won the senior section’s Bugleman Trophy which was played in conjunction with the competition.

Ruth Foley (40) triumphed in the ladies’ 36+ handicap stableford competition, while Rachel Batchelor (104-32-72) was successful in the England Golf Medal.

Josh Ward and Simon Wraith (45) fired their way to glory in Stocksfield’s President’s Putter 4BBB.

Hot on their heels were Cairns Kettles and Ron Moore (44), as were John MacIntyre and Stephen Tearse (43). John Carslake (42) enjoyed success in the Fred Punshon, with Sam Wilkinson (40) and Gordon McArthur (38) next up.

The latest Senior Stableford was a close one with Doug Plummer (40) taken the success from Keith Wilkins (40). Ian Johnson (38) was third.

Just one stroke separated the top two in the August Medal at Tynedale , Michael Stonehouse (78-13-65) just seeing off the challenge of Johnny Dodd (74-8-66). Martin Lamb (79-8-71) helped himself to third spot.

Division Two was won by Terry Lee (83-15-68), with Bob Passmore (88-17-71) taking second after countback from Tony Roberts (86-15-71).
