FORTY-FOUR schoolchildren from Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School are to play sports Down Under.

For the school has signed up for a sports tour of Australia in the summer of 2017, the mixed group of boys and girls to play schools in football, netball and rugby.

Following a successful tour a few years ago, QEHS is heading back to the other side of the world and the school will travel across the East Coast to play a series of matches against local teams while staying with host families.

The students are paying for the majority of the trip themselves, but the school is desperately looking for sponsors to help with costs. Anyone interested in helping out can contact PE teacher Graeme Armstrong on garmstrong@qehs.net.

To help with the fund-raising efforts, the school is hosting a sportsman’s dinner with star guests Dean Richards, the director of rugby at Newcastle Falcons, and former British middle distance runner Jim Alder MBE.

The event will take place on Saturday, February 4, and incldes a three-course meal and auction.

Charlie Richards, the boys’ rugby captain, has been chosen as the male team captain, while Lexie Howard is the girls’ captain. The other skippers are Will Roberts, Heather Hamilton, Ellen Packham and Caitlin Simpson.
