TEENAGE Tynedale Harrier Alex Wood is appealing a disqualification from a national race.

A brilliant performance at the England Athletics Age Group Championships, in Bedford, saw the promising runner reach the U15 800m where he finished in sixth place with a time of 2:04.

But the jubilation turned into disappointment when he learned he had been disqualified for stepping off the track for a few steps.

However, he is contesting the decision as no advantage was gained from doing so and it had no bearing on the final outcome of the race.

Alex has enjoyed a great season, winning an inter-counties schools gold.

He was joined by fellow Tynedale runner Max Pearson who looked to build on his bronze medal in the 1500m at the Scottish equivalent seven weeks prior.

Racing in a 24 man U17 3000m, he shaved six seconds off his personal best with a new time of 8:46.93 which earned him seventh overall.

One year younger than the rest of the field, he and Scotland‘s Adam Scott are expected to be in the top of the field next year as they continue their running battle, Adam finishing ahead of his rival at Bedford. Next up for Max is an appearance at today’s Sainsbury‘s School Games in the 1500m.
