STARS from the world of sport teamed up with the business community to raise thousands of pounds for a children’s charity.

Now in its 15th year, the annual Steve Cram Celebrity Golf Day was held at Slaley Hall, in aid of Newcastle-based COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas).

After teeing off on Slaley’s championship course, players and other guests gathered for a dinner and auction in the evening. When the final sums are added up, the event is expected to have raised over £20,000 for COCO.

Among the celebrities were Glen McCrory, Kriss Akabusi, Steve Harper, John Carver, John Regis, Steve Watson, Don Goodman, Ally Hogg, referee Michael Oliver and broadcasters Ian Payne and Manish Bhasin.

COCO is a Newcastle-based international children’s charity, co-founded by world champion athlete and BBC commentator Steve Cram and former British Army Major Jim Panton in 2000.

COCO has since raised over £4m, which has been invested in sustainable projects in remote regions of the developing world that help alleviate the poverty that prevents children’s education.

Steve said: “It’s been a fantastic day and we really were blessed with great weather this year. Once again, Slaley Hall has proved to be a brilliant venue.

“COCO will be able to make a big difference with the money raised at the golf day, improving access to vital education for young people in East Africa.”
