A SLALEY teenager has returned home with a gold medal after representing his country at the weekend.

Daniel Joyce ran for England in the Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB) Championships, in Scotland, on Saturday.

He won gold in the 800m by half a second, after setting a new personal best time of 1m 52.87s.

The 15-year-old made his England debut at the event, which saw him compete at U17 level.

It marked a double success for the pupil at Blaydon's St Thomas More School, who qualified for the event just seven days earlier.

Representing Durham on July 13 and 14, the Tynedale Harrier took part in the English Schools national championships in Birmingham, winning both his heat and the final in the 800m.
