AHEAD of their meeting in the Premier Division this weekend, both Ponteland United and Wallington progressed in the divisional cup.

Three goals inflicted the damage as United defeated Ashington Colliers 3-0, while it was much closer for Wallington as they edged Shankhouse 2-1.

United kicked on after finding the all-important first goal on 25 minutes to defeat Ashington, the strike coming as Ethan Bewley collected a long ball from captain Glenn Ford and fired past home goalkeeper Liam Douglas.

As half time approached, Colliers went in search of an equaliser and Darren Bowey-Tyler had to be alert to palm Paul Dunn's free kick away for Ford to clear.

They continued to probe after the restart and the ball fell to Adam Bains when Pont failed to clear their lines, but he fired wide from a tight angle.

United looked unsettled and should have been pegged back 10 minutes in when a clearance from Rory Spencer bounced back and fell kindly to the striker, who skied his shot when he should have really been making the net bulge.

The miss proved costly as Ponteland extended their lead five minutes later, David Short's free kick volleyed home by Shaun Johnstone.

The same player made sure of the victory five mintues later, again with a volley, as he swept Reece Havelock-Brown's pull back over the line for 3-0.

WIth the result ultimately in the bag, substitute Chris Hibbitt started to control the game as Ponteland remained on top.

A fantastic team goal involving nine players was the highlight of Wallington's narrow victory over Shankhouse.

A brilliant passing move split the visitors to Oakford Park wide open, and Thomas Truscott was on hand to finish things off for a memorable goal.

He was joined on the scoresheet by teammate John Paxton as Wallington booked a place in the quarter-finals. They have been drawn away to Killingworth Town, while Ponteland have received a home tie against Gateshead Rutherford.
