TEAMS in the Hexham and District Sunday League will contest an additional piece of silverware this term.

After an absence of two seasons, subsidiary cup R&R Hands Mick Simmons Trophy, named after the committee stalwart who spent more than 30 years as manager and secretary of Acomb FC until they folded in 2011, makes a return this weekend.

The cup ran for one season in 2014-2015 after being introduced to give teams with few games left after Christmas more competitive football, with Halfway House Prudhoe, who folded earlier this season, the only winners to date.

From this weekend, 11 teams from the two divisions will battle it out as fixtures are arranged round their remaining league and cup commitments.

The teams are split into two groups (A and B), with the top two of each going through to the semi-finals.

The winners of A meet the runners-up of B, and vice versa.

Group A is made up of five teams after Prudhoe Social Club withdrew from the competition, with Division One sides Heddon St Andrew’s and Hexham Hearts joined by Haltwhistle Railway, Ponteland United Stamfordham and Ponteland Village from the division below.

Barrasford and Prudhoe Town are the highest ranked teams in Group B, with Division Two outfits Hexhamshire, Crawcrook Fox and Hounds, Adam and Eve Prudhoe and Prudhoe Town East End making up the rest of the division.
