WITH the same two scorers as in last week’s defeat to Ponteland United, Wallington bounced back to move up to eighth in the table.

Second half goals from captain Josh Laverick and Dan Thompson this time resulted in three points for the Greens, the visitors overcoming the challenge of Newbiggin.

It was a complete performance from Wallington as they had to defend expertly to keep a buoyed home team out, while they also showed plenty of ability in attack to create the better chances of the game.

While opportunities were hard to come by in the opening half, Thompson came close to breaking the deadlock as he headed Kyle Reardon’s cross wide of the mark.

The best chance fell to Josh Gilmartin as he raced on to a long ball from Brad Richardson, but he was kept out by a great save from the home goalkeeper.

It wasn’t until after the break that Wallington gained the upper hand, through a spectacular goal from Laverick.

The defender was on his way back after going up for a corner when he collected a ball from Gilmartin, and from 20 yards he fired into the top corner for 1-0.

The second goal was similarly impressive as it followed a slick passing move, Reardon’s long ball picking out substitute Ben Culling who in turn found Thomas Truscott, and his cushioned ball into the path of Thompson ended with the striker curling the ball into the top corner with the outside of his foot.

Wallington saw the remainder of the game out as the makeshift, with Nick McClughin starring alongside Laverick and full backs Reardon and Alex Slack.
