A DRAMATIC winner at the death sent Ponteland United into the next round of the Senior Benevolent Bowl.

Reece Havelock-Brown's moment of magic in the final minute of extra time earned United a 3-2 win over Ashington Colliers, seeing them progress against a team they drew with in league competition.

The playmaker collected a knock down from Rory Spencer, turned his marker in an instant and slid the ball past the dejected goalkeeper.

It looked as if penalties were a certainty especially after Havelock-Brown's cross just evaded Spencer, who would have had an open goal to aim at if he had made connection, just moments before the decider.

There was barely time for Ashington to muster a reply, but they nearly found the equaliser to take the game to a shoot-out in sensational fashion but David Brown's speculative 35-yard effort looped over Craig Whinham and hit the top of the crossbar.

The late action brought a game which started at a frantic pace to an end, both teams desperately close to finding an early opener.

Ponteland showed their hand first as Gary Cook latched on to a Havelock-Brown through ball but his shot after beating a man lacked the power to cross the line, and was cleared.

Soon after, a cross from Chris Glass was challenged for by Colliers striker Paul Dunn and Whinham, the ball missed by both and hitting the foot of the post.

After Ponteland squandered a few chances, they found themselves trailing following a needless free kick conceded by Ethan Bewley.

Whinham mistimed his punch and the ball fell loose with the referee awarding a penalty following a goalmouth scramble. Sean Gibson drove the ball home to break the deadlock.

While the goal was against the run of play, Ashington went close to extending the lead on four occasions with Gibson heading wide the best chance from Glass' corner.

United weathered the storm and were on level terms five minutes before the break as Jack L'Argent headed home Havelock-Brown's drilled corner.

Within a minute of the second half, Ponteland were ahead.

Ethan Bewley collected a ball in the opposition penalty area and delayed his shot before calmly finding the bottom corner.

Good play then followed with Cook drilling a ball across goal and out for a goal kick.

Ashington were looking to the long ball to get them back in the game, and United were given a warning on 65 minutes when danger man Dunn robbed Paul Jones of the ball and shot across Whinham, but also wide of the target.

The warning wasn’t heeded for, with 10 minutes to go, Jones was again caught in possession by Dunn as he tried to dribble clear.

The ball was recycled out wide and the subsequent cross was side footed home by Aidan Lynch.

Ashington thought they had it won soon after when Gibson met a corner with his header, but Aaron Brogden cleared off the line with a crucial intervention.

Prudhoe Town's tie with Northern Alliance side Percy Main Amatuers went to extra time, but it was Prudhoe missing out as a result of a late goal.

Jack Armstrong popped up to score the winning goal in a 4-3 victory in stoppage time of extra time, denying Prudhoe the chance to take the tie to penalties.

It brought an entertaining 120 minutes to a close, the scores tied at 2-2 after normal time.

Dan Hadfield had given Main a 27th minute lead, but Prudhoe went into the break ahead after Derek Waters netted twice.

Seven minutes after going behind, man of the match Waters headed home Chris Garwood's cross, and the same man gave his side the lead a minute before half time as he sent home an excellent free kick.

Ryan Lowes was kept out by Main goalkeeper Rob Rodgerson and Waters sent another free kick just over as Prudhoe looked to assert their authority early in the second half.

But Percy were back on level terms on 55 minutes in controversial circumstances when Town full back Ryan Anderson brought down Jake Forster in the area to concede a penalty, the visiting player seemingly yards offside when he picked the ball up.

To rub salt into the wounds, not only was Anderson sent off for picking up a second yellow card, but Sam Thompson send home the penalty to equalise.

Both sides had chances to win it, but the next goal didn't come until the first minute of the second half of extra time with Armstrong firing low past Liam Blair to put Main ahead.

It looked like the game was going to the shoot-out when Arron Fletcher rose to head home Waters' free kick with six minutes to go, but Armstrong's strike at the death saw the Alliance outfit through.

Wallington progressed to the next round too as they put five without reply past Alliance Premier Division rivals North Shields Athletic.

Jordan Nellis scored twice and John Paxton and Tom Truscott one each, with an own goal going in their favour too.

Hexham's trip to Premier side FC United of Newcastle fell foul to the weather, and has been rescheduled for Saturday.
