PRUDHOE YC Seniors knew their excellent run of form would come to an end at some point, but were perhaps not expecting it to come against bottom of the table Blyth.

Going into the game on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run, they were shellshocked by three first half goals from a Blyth team belying their lowly league position.

It was the struggling hosts who started brightest and knocked the ball around freely in the opening minutes, although Prudhoe countered when Lee Blackburn sent Adam Greenwood clear but he sent his shot just wide.

Blyth responded immediately by taking the lead on six minutes, the advantage doubled on 20 minutes in between Danny Driver sending a header from a corner just wide at the other end.

Prudhoe were playing poorly but nearly clawed a goal back as Jack Bell’s shot went the wrong side of the post, but things weren’t going their way when Driver deflected a cross into his own net to give Blyth a three goal advantage on 41 minutes.

The visitors improved after the break, and they were within a goal of their hosts with Greenwood twice finishing smartly after running on to through balls from Blackburn on both occasions.

Yet the fightback suffered a setback when Blyth quickly reopened a two goal cushion at 4-2.

The Seniors continued to pour forward looking for a way back in the game but Driver’s header into the right net a minute from time came too late in the day.

Substitute Dean Brown was named man of the match after impressing on his debut after entering the fray early in the second half.
