PRUDHOE Town Women earned a point in their end-to-end encounter with Durham Cestria in the North East Women‘s Northern Division.

Third placed Durham had beaten Town 3-0 in the reverse fixture, but this one could have gone either way as both teams played their part in an entertaining spectacle.

Cestria went ahead on 24 minutes through Leanne Bates, but it was all square again two minutes later when a superb through ball from Catherine Johnston played Kelly Loughhead in and she lobbed the goalkeeper for an excellent equaliser.

Town had the chance to take the lead after the half hour mark but a wicked free kick from Rebecca George was missed by all and the opportunity was lost.

It looked to be costly as, immediately at the other end, Durham regained the advantage when Town’s Ruth Lewis unfortunately put the ball into her own net.

Yet the pendulum continued to swing from side to side, Prudhoe levelling again four minutes before half time when Lauren Cannell‘s pin point corner was headed home by Johnston.

Centre half Cannell put in a great display to earn the woman of the game award, clearing off the line on 65 minutes to deny Cestria moments after Rebecca Foster pulled off a great save to keep it level.

Ten minute later, Loughhead had the ball in the back of the net again but her strike was ruled offside this time as she was judged to have made her run onto Johnston’s through pass too early.

The point was well deserved for a Prudhoe side who had called on Foster to keep goal after months out, with injured player Courtney Vacher doing a great job to step into the managerial breach as a one-off.
