THE 10 men of Prudhoe Town battled back to secure a last minute winner against Murton.

Trailing 2-1 and with reduced numbers after Rob Grainey picked up a second yellow card with 25 minutes to go, they showed their battling spirit as Jack Wanless netted a 90th minute decider to nick it 3-2.

It was Wanless’s second goal of the afternoon, cancelling out Murton’s second minute opener on 12 minutes.

The teams went into the break level at 1-1, but Murton regained the advantage after the restart to put pressure on Town.

Prudhoe’s chances were hindered with Grainey’s dismissal, but it spurred his teammates on as Ste Forster equalised. It was then over to Wanless to put the icing on the cake, the three points moving them up one place in the Wearside League table.

Prudhoe were again in action in a friendly with Northern League outfit Ryton and Crawcrook Albion on Monday evening, the teams drawing 1-1 with Derek Waters netting for Town.

Paddy Finnerty was the toast of Prudhoe YC Seniors as he was instrumental in his side disposing of Northern Alliance Division Two rivals West Allotment Celtic A in the Bill Gardner Cup.

Named man of the match for an all-out display, the striker scored two of Prudhoe’s goals and was credited with the assist for an own goal as they came away with a 3-1 triumph.

The Allotment goalkeeper was kept busy throughout, with Prudhoe looking like they could have been five up before the break.

The opener came after a good move instigated by full back Jack Bell, who fed Phil Murray who in turn played in Finnerty for a close range finish.

Finnerty extended the lead with an excellent drive, while he played a big part in the third as it was his drilled ball across goal which was turned into the net by a Celtic defender. While Finnerty stole the limelight, it was a magnificent team performance and full back Jack Bell particularly pushed his teammate close for the star man accolade.

Prudhoe will now have to dispose of a Division One team if they are to progress past the quarter-finals stage as they will meet either Longbenton or Newcastle Chemfica on December 19.

Wallington missed the chance to break into the top five of the Alliance Premier Division as they lost 2-0 at Carlisle City.

Despite Kyle Reardon impressing for The Greens, they returned from their trip west pointless as Carlisle went level on 22 points with seventh placed Wallington.

It was the first time that Wallington had lost in the league since the end of September, going down to the same opposition when Carlisle edged them out by three goals to two.

After four weeks of frustration, Hexham are praying they finally get their Northumberland FA Minor Cup tie with Longbenton played.

The third round tie has been switched to the Wentworth Leisure Centre after a series of postponements, both teams hopeful they can finally meet for a place in the quarter-finals.
