THE underdogs of Prudhoe YC Seniors hung on to claim a county cup scalp.

The Division Two side edged a thrilling match with Division One side Blyth Isabella 3-2 to progress in the Northumberland FA Minor Cup, but were made to work hard for their victory after racing into a 3-0 lead.

They played some excellent stuff in the opening period, and took a deserved lead on 15 minutes when Joe Finnerty set up brother Paddy who hit a firm shot into the net from 20 yards.

Two minutes later the Blyth defence was carved open with a brilliant move started from the back, David Scott collecting a return pass from Paddy Finnerty and then flicking the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The onslaught continued as Connor Bell was put through on 18 minutes but saw his shot drift narrowly past the post, but Prudhoe made it three on the half hour when centre back John Hudson planted a firm header home from Lee Blackburn‘s corner.

Prudhoe were well in control but let their opponents back in on the stroke of half time, conceding a soft goal from a harmless corner a minute before the break.

Blyth came out firing after the restart but didn‘t find a second goal until the 65th minute.

The visitors bombarded Prudhoe and peppered the home goalmouth with a succession of corners, but they held firm with in-form defender Jordan Phillips deserving his man of the match award.

Tynedale neighbours Hexham joined them in the next round as they too had to defend deep to earn a slender 2-1 victory over North Northumberland outfit Spittal Rovers.

While it should have been more comfortable, the hosts were under the cosh for the final 10 minutes but they saw out the tie with some excellent desperate defending.

Matthew MacLoughlin was making a handful of himself early in the encounter, and it was he who gifted Hexham the lead when he turned his marker and fired a left footed strike across the away goalkeeper Adam Hodgson.

The shot stopper was being made to work hard but he was beaten again early in the second half when Marc Nixon got the slightest of touches onto Scott Robson‘s delivery into the box to deceive Hodgson and make it 2-0.

MacLoughlin and Nixon both had chances to extend the lead as did Kurtis Harvey, but found Hodgson in great form while Lewis Loughhead was denied by the keeper by a sensational save.

Adam Turner got Rovers back into the game with the help of a deflection off marker Patrick McAlindon, and the away side increased the pressure only for the Hexham defence to throw their bodies on the line to secure the victory.

Ethan Bewley scored twice, and Gary Cook, Chris Garwood, Billy Holden, Reece Havelock-Brown and debutant William Jarvis-Smith all registered as Ponteland United thumped Breakers Bedlington 7-1 to progress. United’s reserves side made it through too after a 3-1 victory over Hazlerigg Victory.

Wallington moved up to seventh in the Northern Alliance Premier Division after returning from Gateshead Rutherford with a 5-2 triumph.

Chris Moffitt, Justin Millican, Calum Donohoe, Ash McAlpine and Alex Slack all found the back of the net to earn maximum points.

An under strength Prudhoe Town endured a trip to forget as they shipped 10 unanswered goals in their Monkwearmouth Charity Cup tie.

Three goals helped Prudhoe Town Women to their first three points of their North East Women‘s Football League campaign.

Lauren Cannell and Eleanor Oakenfold notched to go with an own goal to secure the 3-1 success over Lowick United Ladies.

There was more misery for Tynedale Ladies in the Premier as they shipped in five goals at home to high flying Boldon Ladies.
