PONTELAND United’s seven match winning streak came to an abrupt halt as they were thumped 5-0 by North Shields Athletic.

Their hosts jumped above them in the Premier Division table as a result of the three points, United reeling with the heavy defeat.

The opening 20 minutes were fairly even with both teams creating chances, Ponteland registering the first of note as Reece Havelock-Brown’s shot was palmed away by David Rule with United full back David Shot heading just wide from the following cross.

At the other end, Shields were given the opportunity to net when Steven Satterthwaite was deemed to have tripped his marker in the box, but it remained goalless as Darren Bowey-Tyler tipped away Sean Millington’s penalty.

Satterthwaite was to be taken off soon after as tempers started to fray, the midfielder jumping into a fully committed tackle with the equally combatitive Errington despite already being booked.

The visitors did break the deadlock though when a lack of communication in United’s defence saw a ball hit a defender and drop invitingly for Jasper Scott to shoot home.

Ponteland should have levelled almost immediately when Short picked out the run of fellow full back Paul Jones, but he sent his header wide with Rule fully exposed. Chris Rue saw his cross tipped onto the crossbar early into the second half, but Ponteland pressed the self destruct button as Shields broke when Ethan Bewley was caught on the ball, striker Lee Crammond beating two players and then showing composure to finish the move himself.

Danger man Crammond made it three soon after, and gave United a mountain to climb by completing his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining when a speculative free kick from distance found its way past Bowey-Tyler.

By this point, Pont were throwing everybody forward as they gambled for a way back into the game but they suffered a further blow when Scott made it five as he found himself in acres of space to fire home his second of the game.

l Ponteland United Reserves bounced back to pick up three points in the Tyneside Amateur League.

After losing heavily to Wardley seven days previously, they were excellent as they defeated Killingworth YPC 5-1.

Captain Darren Parkes, Daniel Mupungu, Toy Spratt, Daniel Brown and Andrew Davidson all found the target during a great team performance which pleased manager Kennie Malia.

While there were many contenders for the accolade, Kittisak Spratt came away with the honour for United who remain second in the table.
