PONTELAND United came from two goals down on two occasions to edge a 10-goal thriller with Northern Alliance Premier Division rivals Wallington.

Trailing 2-0 at the break and then 4-2, the visitors to Oakford Park pulled off a great comeback to take the game 6-4 to edge their way to top spot in Group B on goal difference after the first round of group games in the Clayton Charity Cup.

Sam Walton scored twice and Adam Barker and Ben Fenwick one apiece for Wallington, but doubles from Gary Cook, Ethan Bewley and a trialist earned United the three points.

They went on to add an extra point by winning the shoot-out 4-3.

In Group A, goals from Bradley Lowes, Tony Lancaster and Kurtis Harvey saw Hexham get off to a winning start. John Dewhurst had reduced arrears for Winlaton Vulcans at 2-0 down, but Hexham from the division above took the tie 3-1.

The game was overshadowed by an ankle injury to Hexham’s Gavin Hunter, the delay meaning the shoot-out wasn’t possible and both teams were awarded half a point.

Haltwhistle Jubilee and Prudhoe YC Seniors shared four goals, Scott Jacobsen and Jack Barker on target for Jubilee and Sam Dibb-Fuller and Adan Greenwood netting for Prudhoe, who lost 5-4 on pens.
