PONTELAND United hit five goals of their own as they got over the previous week’s thumping.

Losing 5-0 to Alliance frontrunners North Shields Athletic, United were back in fine style as they defeated Percy Main Amateurs 5-1.

Manager Liam McIvor couldn’t have predicted a better response as they needed just two minutes to gain the lead, albeit in fortuitous circumstances, as Tommy-Lee Bainbridge’s header took a wicked deflection and was diverted into the corner of the net.

Yet Percy Main were back on level terms just five minutes later as a misjudged header from Glenn Ford was pounced upon and, although the initial shot hit the post, the ball fell into the path of Stewart Wright to tap home.

United were back ahead on 15 minutes through route one football as Darren Bowey-Tyler’s goal kick was headed on by Shaun Johnstone, and Alex Nisbet planted his left footed shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Ponteland’s sails were up and they made it 3-1 on 25 minutes when Bainbridge curled a delightful ball for Johnstone to run beyond the defence and round the advancing Jack Thompson before sliding the ball into the empty net.

For all their dominance, it wasn’t until 15 minutes remaining that they got their fourth as the returning Ryan Potts came out of the defence and slid a ball through to lone striker Johnstone.

He let it continue its journey into the path of Bainbridge who skipped beyond the defence and beat Thompson.

The fifth and final goal came five minutes later after Zack Bewley was brought down just outside the area, Nisbet stepping up and arrowing the ball into the top corner to keep United in touching distance of the teams at the top.
