THEIR league challenge may have faltered, but Ponteland United did get their hands on a piece of silverware.

Killingworth Town are the favourites to be crowned champions of the Alliance, but they were unable to get past Pont on pens in the final of the Bay Plastics Challenge Cup.

The competition was decided in a shoot-out after the teams were level 1-1 after 120 minutes, United keeping their cool from 12 yards out to record the 4-3 victory.

Ponteland opened the scoring against a team they recently beat by the single goal, striker Shaun Johnstone on target after just eight minutes.

It was 1-1 soon after as Lee Waugh’s strike on 11 minutes levelled the scoring, and it remained that way for the remainder of normal time and extra time before Ponteland stepped up to clinch the trophy.

There was a quick turnaround after their cup heroics of Thursday evening, as they travelled to Whitley Bay A in the league on Saturday.

Ponteland had the opportunity to claw back points on table topping Killingworth, whose game with Northbank Carlisle was postponed, but instead slipped one place to fourth as goals from Kyle Patton, Chris Moore and Andy Robertson saw Bay record a 3-0 victory.

Ponteland’s busy week saw them host Gateshead Rutherford on Wednesday evening, the teams sharing four goals to end with a point apiece.

Wallington passed up the opportunity to jump two places to seventh in the Premier Division table as they lost to the odd goal in seven to Newbiggin.

They were always in the game and a strike from Kyle Reardon and a goal from Sam Walton, along with an own goal, had them knocking on the door. However, two goals from John Wilson and one each from Jordan Miller and Craig Towart ensured the points were going back with 10th placed Newbiggin. Hexham’s hopes of securing promotion from Division One hit another setback as they lost 4-3 to fifth placed Wallsend Labour Club.

The Tynedale side had the chance to open up an eight point gap over main rivals Grainger Park, who had been in Northumberland FA Minor Cup final action on Friday evening, but remained five points clear having played four extra games.

Tony Lancaster, Kurtis Harvey and Will Forsyth found the back of the net for Hexham, but Wallsend recorded the points through two goals from Declan King and one each from Ryan Ferrier and Karl Redshaw. Wallsend Boys Club then did Hexham a favour by defeating Grainger Park 2-1 on Wednesday.
