AN INTERVENTION by John Paxton denied Wallington a point against table topping North Shields Athletic.

With fellow striker Dan Thompson’s effort on goal heading over the line, Paxton ran on to lend a helping hand as they welcomed the high flyers to Scots Gap.

However, the goal was ruled out with Paxton deemed in an offside position, leaving the Greens without a point to show for their efforts.

They ended up losing 2-1 to a strong Shields side who netted either side of the half time whistle to continue their charge at the top of the table.

They had to come from behind, though, as in-form Thompson gave his side the lead after just three minutes when he powered home a header from a corner.

Wallington controlled the opening 20 minutes of the encounter, but Athletic finished the half strongly and were on level terms two minutes before the break.

They continued on the front foot after the restart to find their second goal on 47 minutes, but the game became a bit of a dull affair with neither side able to create too many chances.

That was until Thompson raced through and knocked the ball past the onrushing keeper, only for Paxton’s involvement to see the goal ruled out and Shields hold on for all three points.

l Ponteland United Reserves weren’t able to make their dominance count as they lost 2-1 to Jesmond in the Tyneside Amateur League.

Man of the match Daren Parkes scored a free kick from 25 yards, but goals from Andy Mogwo and Tim Clark earned the visitors the points.
