OVINGHAM schoolgirls enjoyed a double triumph as they booked their place in the Northumberland School Games final.

Both Ovingham Middle School's Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 girls' football teams won the Tynedale heats to secure their spot in the county competition next June.

Hosted at Corbridge Middle School, more than 200 girls from five of the district's middle schools and three primary schools - Allendale, Newbrough and Haydon Bridge's Shaftoe Trust - made for a competitive event.

In addition to the participants, hosts Corbridge provided sports leaders and Newcastle United supplied two members of staff to support the youngsters.

It was the first event organised by the new School Games Organiser for Tynedale, Damien Dimmick, who was pleased to see the event so well supported.
