THE luck was against Prudhoe Town as they returned from Cleator Moor Celtic with nothing to show for their dominance.

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Devine was kept busy throughout and pulled off seven fantastic saves to keep Prudhoe out, with the hosts taking the chances they created to record a 4-0 victory.

Town travelled to Cumbria with a young, scratch team with numbers low due to various reasons, with midfielder Jack Barker donning the keeper gloves in the absence of regular stopper Liam Blair.

And it was from Barker’s goal kick that Moor took the lead just four minutes in, his kick picked up in the middle of the park and finding the hosts’ man of the match skipper Tom Mahone who chipped the stand-in goalie with a great strike from 25 yards out.

Prudhoe responded well from going behind and created chances to level, 16-year-old debutant Kelvin Thear unfortunate not to break his duck as he hit the post and was then kept out by a superb stop from Devine.

But they went into the half time break even further behind when Mahone’s corner was headed home by Callum Birdsall with four minutes remaining.

It was all one-way traffic after the break with Prudhoe desperate to get back into the game, but Thear was unable to find the goal his man of the match display deserved as he hit the crossbar and was again denied on numerous occasions by Devine.

It was against the run of play that Cleator put the game to bed in the final five minutes, Birdsall getting his second of the afternoon when he turned and fired past Barker.

The final hammer blow came in injury time when Harvy Stainton crossed for Ryan Newbridge to convert his side’s fourth of the encounter.
