IMPRESSIVE Hexham Porto clinched the U10 West Division Youth Cup – but not without a real scare.

There only looked one winner as the Hexham team went three goals ahead, but two quick goals from fired-up final opponents Prudhoe YC Thunder, both scored by their main man Jago Mullarkey, threatened to take the game to extra time.

It was, however, a double from Hexham’s Archie Weeks which secured the silverware, his strikes adding to a Prudhoe own goal in the opening half.

In an entertaining fixture between two teams with real promise, Hexham took the tie by the scruff of the neck and had the better of the first half.

Campbell Edward and Samuel Davison both sent early efforts wide of the mark, while Prudhoe goalkeeper Harry Reeson had to make saves to keep out Cameron Hardy and Max Gradwell.

The early pressure paid off with the opener on 14 minutes, when Gradwell put a ball from Taylor Milton’s wicked corner back across goal for an unfortunate Prudhoe defender to guide it into his own net.

Prudhoe tried to respond but a promising run from Ben Holmes was snuffed out by good defending from Davison, at the expense of a corner.

At the other end, an effort from Davison was heading for the top corner before it was tipped over, while a well struck shot from Prudhoe’s Oscar Lees was brilliantly stopped down low by Hexham keeper James Craig.

The second half started in a more subdued manner until Hexham doubled their lead on nine minutes, Weeks collecting a throw and showing good footwork before calmly slotting the ball under Reeson.

Hexham remained on the front foot and Gradwell robbed his man of possession to bear down on goal, but his effort sailed off target.

It seemed like it was game over just a minute later, though, as Hexham opened up a three goal advantage. Weeks showed great composure to control his shot from a corner, and it found the back of the net after taking a nick off teammate Dean Smith.

Any thoughts Hexham had that they could breeze to the final whistle were put on hold as Mullarkey put Prudhoe back in with a shout, a superb solo goal seeing him evade his opponents and then firing home.

His second came soon after as he volleyed home William Kidman’s corner to make an unnervy ending for Hexham, but Mullarkey was unable to complete his hat-trick when he sent an effort just over the top.

Hexham continued to attack as Davison and Edward went close, and it was the green and whites celebrating as they ended as victors by three goals to two.

They are hoping to add to their trophy cabinet when they face Wallsend BC Malaga in the final of the Pin Point U10 League Cup at Newcastle United Acadmey, on May 5.
