GOALKEEPERS aren’t really known for their goal scoring ability, but Prudhoe Town stopper Liam Blair has a claim on the winner against Cleator Moor Celtic.

While officially marked down as an own goal, Blair’s deep free kick into the opposition penalty area was heading goalwards before it took a deflection off a defender and found the back of the net.

With the score at 2-2 and with just seven minutes remaining, Blair spotted the ball after a Celtic man was ruled offside. His long drive upfield caused all sorts of panic in the penalty area, and it took the telling touch of a green and white shirt after Town’s Arron Fletcher challenged for a header.

It earned the three points the hosts felt they deserved after a dominant display, although they had to come from behind on two occasions as Celtic proved more clinical in front of goal.

Prudhoe were particularly impressive during the first half as their brand of football created a host of chances, yet Cleator Moor took a 1-0 advantage into the break as they profited from a corner.

Town were denied in their appeals for a penalty when Josh Brooks was brought down from behind, referee James Lowery unsighted by bodies in his way.

While the visitors were well organised, in-form striker Ste Forster managed to breach the defence as he levelled things following the restart.

Again, Cleator dominated aerially at a set piece to regain the lead, but Prudhoe refused to throw in the towel.

And the pivotal moment came when Fletcher equalised for a second time, powering home a header which knocked the stuffing out of a hard working away side.

The victory sent Prudhoe to 11th in the Wearside League standings, and it is now eight wins from 10 played at Kimberly Park.
