THE goal fest continued at Prudhoe YC Seniors as they overturned a two-goal deficit to move up to sixth in the league table.

Making it 29 goals during a four-match winning streak, they hit nine goals this time as they inflicted a 9-2 defeat on Blyth Town A, who started the day two places above their hosts.

Town were boosted by the services of first team captain John Iveson in defence and prolific forward Gary Day as their Northern League game at Thornaby was postponed.

And it looked like they were in the mood to run riot as they took advantage of Prudhoe’s stuttering start, registering the opening goal of the game after just five minutes courtesy of Curtis Miller.

The hosts, who lost James Watson to an ankle injury soon after, looked out of sorts and fell further behind when Blyth took advantage of some indecision in the Prudhoe backline with Chris Lisle extending their lead.

It was a poor start after a bright opening two minutes, which saw Matty Robinson sting the palms of the away goalkeeper with a rasping drive from distance.

But the goals shocked Prudhoe into life, and they came storming back with three goals in five minutes as the fixture reached the half hour mark.

Getting the ball rolling, Lee Blackburn fed Sam Brown, and he beat his man and hit a fine striker from the edge of the box to reduce arrears.

The teams were level almost immediately when Brown turned provider, playing in Adam Greenwood to round the goalkeeper and slot home.

In a remarkable turn-around, they were 3-2 up on 35 minutes when Robinson put in Greenwood who duly despatched his second of the afternoon.

A resurgent Prudhoe came out the blocks after the break, and they treated a sizeable crowd, despite the wet and windy weather, to a mini goal of the season competition during a dominant second half display. Robinson started the spectacular when he collected a header from Brown in the middle of the pack and lofted a superb 40 yard drive over the goalkeeper, leaving him grasping at fresh air.

With just seven minutes gone, Prudhoe registered again when man of the match centre half John Hudson, who is enjoying a run of superlative form, intercepted the ball on the halfway line and drifted past two opponents before smashing a 35 yard piledriver past the bemused Blyth keeper.

If the result wasn’t already in doubt, it was ultimately game over with 30 minutes remaining as former Sunderland junior Sean Brown, returning to the round ball game after a stint with Newcastle Falcons rugby team, broke clear and rounded the goalkeeper to make it 6-2.

Prudhoe weren’t finished there though, and the screamers continued to rain in with Robinson stepping up and smashing a rocket past the Blyth goalkeeper from 25 yards after Sam Brown was brought down on 75 minutes.

Greenwood, who scored five last time out, completed his hat-trick when he finished from close range after a great ball from Sean Brown, the goal taking the striker to third in the division’s goalscoring charts with 13 for the season.

The scoring was finally brought to a close five minutes from time as Robinson capped a memorable day with the final assist, setting up Jack Bell who got on the scoresheet with a low shot from 12 yards.

Prudhoe will hope to keep the goalscoring run going when the welcome 11th placed Whitley Bay BC Seniors to the high school on Saturday.
