A FANTASTIC display in extra time saw Ponteland United lift the Northumberland FA Minor Cup.

They defeated Alnmouth United 3-1 in the final on Friday evening, Ponteland pushing on in extra time after a 1-1 draw.

They took just 10 minutes to break the deadlock, Gary Cook, in for the cup tied Alex Benjamin, finishing a good move only for Alnmouth to equalise with 20 minutes to go.

The game went into extra time and it was Cook again celebrating as he confidently shot away from the goalkeeper on 102 minutes. The trophy was wrapped up three minutes from time when Reece Havelock-Brown sent home an effort.

Ponteland returned to league action on Monday and picked up three points in Division One of the Northern Alliance, Gregg McDermott and Havelock-Brown bagging braces and Benjamin the other in the 5-2 victory over Felling Magpies.

The lead was doubled just four minutes later, Patrick McAlindon somehow ducking out of the way of a fierce Lewis Loughhead drive as it found it way into the net.

Second half goals from Jossy Wright and John Wright saw Alston Moor Sports Club, who had Adam Dickson starring in midfield, to a 2-0 win over Wolsingham in the Crook and District League. They are now favourites to claim a promotion spot as the result followed a 4-0 thumping of Barnard Castle Glaxo Rangers.

After losing to the only goal to Killingworth YPC, Ponteland United Reserves bounced back in style by defeating Wardley 6-2 in the Tyneside Amateur League. Man of the match Daniel Hadfield hit a hat-trick, with Daniel Troughton, Conor Brumwell and Gary Oliver also netting.
