COMPILING a record of man of the match awards throughout the season, the Hexham Courant has used the information to construct teams of the year for both divisions of the Hexham and District Sunday League.

The players with most awards have been drafted into the star team. Where there's been a tie, the selection has hinged on most goals and then their team's final position in the league table.

Leading the charts in Division One is Ciaran Fleming, of Bardon Mill Bowes Lyon, who smashed his first year in senior football as a fresh faced 16-year-old, claiming six awards. He has bagged his place on the left of midfield.

While the division's leading scorer, Barrasford's Marc Nixon, missed out on a place, runner-up Adam Greenwood, of Halfway House Prudhoe, and fifth placed Stefan Rainbow, of Prudhoe Social Club, have been included.

He may have only scored three league goals this season (he was outscored by teammates Greg Irwin, Dan Robinson, Dan Kirkup, Mark Robson, Thomas Wilkie and James Charteries), but joining them in attack is Haltwhistle Jubilee striker Shaun Johnstone whose all-round play impressed throughout.

Teammate Robson is in the starting XI in the centre of midfield alongside Hexham Phoenix's Stephen Marsden as four man of the match awards each saw them share the division's runner-up spot. Out right of the midfield, Barrasford's David Hall gained a call-up.

Making it a Bardon Mill double, Paul Wilson was selected in a backline which consists of four players playing for three of the division's bottom four teams.

The bottom two of Phoenix Chopwell and Halfway House may have conceded 125 goals between them but their defensive players earned much credit from the opposition.

Centre half Glynn Taylor provided Chopwell with their only representative, with Halfway defender Danny Driver catching the eye too. His teammate Mark Clark earned just two man of the matches, but that was at least one more than other goalkeepers in the league to secure his spot in between the sticks.

Just missing out on a place in the team despite being joint fifth in the list, Gary Nixon, of Barrasford, and Scott Douglas, of Prudhoe Town, were pipped for midfield berths.
