DOMINANT Haltwhistle Jubilee have claimed back-to-back clean sweeps by repeating last year’s quadruple.

With the pressure on after an all-conquering 2013/2014 season, the Jubes made it eight trophies from a possible eight in the Hexham and District Sunday League by lifting the League Cup at the weekend.

They were made to work hard by purveyors of fluent football Halfway House Prudhoe, the champions of Division Two, but they saw off the challenge to claim a 4-1 victory.

Making sure of another four trophy haul, man of the match Shaun Johnstone and Mark Robson both hit doubles. Adam Greenwood netted Prudhoe’s consolation.

Having swept aside all opposition in the Hexham league for two years running, the team are aiming to go further in the prestigious Northumberland FA Sunday Cup next season.

For the past two seasons, they have been disposed of North Shields Formica on penalties at the quarter-finals stage. The previous year, they lost in the semis to champions Burradon and New Fordley.

Manager Cameron Bell said: “Burradon are a really good side and it would take a lot to beat them, but next year we want to get to the showpiece event of the county cup final.

“If we could get lucky with the draw and avoid Burradon, I think we have a fighting chance of doing that.

“It is a higher quality in the county cup, and we would rather play teams like that and lose by the odd goal than beat somebody in a local cup by seven or eight goals. You feel like you have achieved something by giving a really good team a tough game.

“We’ll keep working hard and play to our strengths, and everybody on and off the field has been fantastic for us this year.

“I said at the presentation last year to enjoy the moment of winning the quadruple as it would probably never happen again.

“But to do it again this year against three different teams in the cup finals is an unbelievable achievement, and we’re going to celebrate in style at the end-of-season trip!”

After the celebrations from Sunday calmed down, Haltwhistle finished their campaign with a dead rubber league curtain closer with Wylam on Tuesday, neither side either able to break the deadlock.

Meanwhile, Barrasford ended their campaign with a battling draw at runners-up Hexham Phoenix as they cancelled out a three goal deficit.

Trailing to goals from Hexham’s Stephen Marsden, Kurtis Harvey and Jack Gradwell, Barrasford claimed a share of the spoils as Marc Nixon shared two and Paul Makepeace one.

Usually deployed in goal, Lee Armstrong was man of the match for Barra in a left wing position, while Tom Hacking was Phoenix’s equivalent.

Halfway got over their League Cup heartbreak to shock Division One side Stocksfield in the final of the Mick Simmons Trophy.

A penalty from Lee Blackburn separated the sides as it proved the only goal of the game, while Kieran Russel was star man.

They go looking for their third trophy of the season when they contest the Division Two KO Cup final with Swinburne Arms Stamfordham on Wednesday at Hexham’s Wentworth Leisure Centre, for a 6.45pm kick off.
