Wark make cup progress thanks to Jewitt’s double

THE second round of the West Northumberland Youth FA Coalfields Regeneration Trust U10s Cup took precedence on Saturday morning, with only a handful of Tyne Valley Insurance Tynedale Mini-soccer League fixtures being played.

Sporting Stocksfield entertained Wark in their second round tie and although they gave their usual battling performance the visitors won 3-0 with second half goals from Callum Jewitt (2) and Jake Thompson.

Good play by Michael Arnup almost set up a chance for Dominic Rapier but Stocksfield survived to hit back, with James Doneathy having an early chance, only to be denied by Wark keeper Ross Milburn.

Charlie Allan, Emily Ward and Daniel Kirsopp linked up with promise but the visitors closed ranks, with Jordan Thompson and Jack Johnstone combining to cut out the danger.

Play switched to the opposite end where Tom Hill had an effort deflected behind for a corner and as Stocksfield countered Allan was prominent again with his persistence just failing to work an opening for Kirsopp.

Doneathy broke quickly down the right to fire in a low cross shot, with visitors’ keeper Milburn stretching out a telescopic leg to divert it off target.

A Doneathy free-kick was deflected onto the far post and behind by a packed defence and from the resultant corner the ball flashed across the face of the goal and away to safety.

Jewitt made a dangerous run but his cross was well held by Stocksfield keeper Sam Lambert..

A Doneathy shot looked destined for the top corner until the excellent Milburn tipped it over in brilliant style while a Wark counter attack led to Jake Thompson firing a cross shot against the bar.

The North Tyne outfit came again with Arnup and Hill both going close, while good defensive play by the tenacious Oliver Wilson got Stocksfield out of trouble on the left.

An Arnup effort was blocked by the back tracking Daniel Kirsopp and a Rapier snap shot flashed narrowly off target.

A Doneathy corner caused a frenetic melee in the Wark goalmouth before Milburn bravely emerged with the ball from amongst a forest of flying boots.

On the stroke of half-time Charlie Allan worked his way through but was driven wide and his shot from a narrow angle crashed into the side netting.

Stocksfield had striven hard to take advantage of the strong wind in the opening period but faced an uphill task after the break with the visitors now favoured by the blustery conditions.

Wark pressed forward at the start of the second half with Rapier playing a good ball down the line to Jewitt who forced a right wing corner and this led to Jake Thompson firing over on the turn.

Doneathy was on hand to block shots from Jake Thompson and Jewitt in quick succession, but the deadlock was broken eight minutes after the interval.

Wark opened their account with a cross shot by Jake Thompson finding the far corner of the net.

Kirsopp made a determined crossfield run, challenged all the way by Arnup, which the defender finally won at the expense of a corner.

From this, Wark broke well through Luke McCormick, whose pass to Jewitt was driven just wide.

Dan Kirsopp was prominent on the left for Stocksfield with a number of good runs, but he often lacked support, and a typical surge led to his slotted low effort drifting wide of the near post.

Wark doubled their advantage with a Jewitt shot from a narrow angle proving too much for the home keeper as it swung in the wind to find the net just inside the back post.

Kirsopp continued to cause problems for the visitors’ defence, and only the intervention of Jake Thompson prevented him from breaking into the danger zone.

Lewis Caudle made a timely challenge on Arnup, with Emily Ward on hand to complete the clearance, but the issue was put beyond all doubt when Jewitt cut inside to leave the keeper helpless to make the final score 3-0.

Haydon Bridge U10s made no mistake in reaching the third round by hitting nine without reply against Corbridge United Lions.

Crispin Straker led the way with a hat-trick while Joe Johnston, Alexander McHarg and Cedwyn Scott all hit doubles while Dale Graham was their man of the match.

High-flying Hexham Greens also proved too strong for Prudhoe YC Blues U10s with Ryan Gardner, Jake Dunlop, Oliver Miller and Calum Thomas amongst the scorers.

Mark Fraser netted a consolation goal for the visitors, whose keeper Oliver Hayward impressed despite the scoreline.

Haydon Bridge U9s could well dominate their divisions for the next couple of seasons, and they competed brilliantly against their year older opponents Stocksfield Rangers before losing out 3-2 on penalties.

The tie was played at a terrific pace from start to finish and the Stocksfield boys took a 10th minute lead when Josh Watts headed home a corner from close range.

Stung into action the Haydonians youngsters hit back strongly to lead 2-1 at half-time by virtue of two powerful strikes from Joel Pearson.

The second half proved a tight affair with both defences working hard to keep their opponents at bay, but an opportunist goal with five minutes to go by Bradley Maughan took the game into extra-time.

Both sides strove hard for the winning goal but there was no addition to the scoreline and the Rangers edged their way into the next round on penalties.

Keeper Jay Pattison took the man of the match award for Haydon Bridge who had done the Second Division proud, with the versatile Charlie Weatherhead starring for the Stocksfield side.

A long range second half brace by Jack Arnold saw Corbridge United U10s progress into the next stage of the competition with the 2-0 defeat of Throckley Magpies Inter.

Midfielder Nika Sharifi starred for Corbridge with the Black and Whites best served by Marcus Gilroy.

There were goals galore at Throckley where the Magpies U9s shared 10 with visitors Prudhoe YC Blues U9s.

Reece Whitfield notched a hat-trick and the outstanding Jack Turnbull a double for the hosts with Dalton Newton (2), Luke Banks (2) and James Potts on target for Prudhoe in normal time.

Aaron Ridley took the man of the match award for the away side who will carry the flag for the Second Division into the third round after Potts struck again and Banks completed his treble to clinch a 7-5 victory in extra time.

The only U10s Division One fixture played was at Haltwhistle where the home side went down 3-1 to Wylam Rockets Blues in a good competitive game.

The excellent Johnie Anderson notched a hat-trick, with Cavin Glenwright netting for Halty, whose star man was midfielder Dion Parker.

The bottom of the Second Division clash between Haltwhistle United Blues and Prudhoe YC Reds U9s resulted in a first win of the season for the far West Division side.

Adam Archibald (2), Liam Mitchinson (2) and Brandon Sproul were the winners’ marksmen, with Joshua Caisley their top performer, while Harry Armstrong replied for the visitors whose keeper Lewis Hind starred.

The luckless Prudhoe side should take heart from Allendale who have struggled for so long before their great start to this season.

With favourites Haydon Bridge U9s on Divisional Cup duty the Dale took full advantage of taking over as outright leaders with the 6-4 defeat of Corbridge United Hoops.

Finn McKendrick (2) and Aaron Smith (2) gave the Corbridge side a 4-2 lead at half-time but Allendale showed their mettle by fighting back to clinch vital points with strikes from Alex Liverick (2), Oliver Handcock, Callum Snowdon, Bradley Wilson and the impressive Owen Baxter.

Pride as well as points were at stake when Wylam Rockets Whites and Wylam Rockets Yellows clashed.

The game was played in a tremendous atmosphere with the teams making light of the conditions with the honours shared following a 2-2 draw.

James Maxwell marked the occasion by scoring his first-ever goal for the Whites after being set up by Jacob Hatch, who then capped a man of the match display by netting a brilliant solo effort.

Matthew Bunney and Callum Piggot were on target for the Yellows whose star performer was midfielder Samuel Collins.

l The Tyne Valley Insurance Tynedale Mini-soccer League will hold a meeting at Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham, on Wednesday at 7.30pm when all clubs should be represented.
