Rain fails to dampen tournament spirit

A weekend of football at Allendale Sports Club started on Saturday morning with the junior tournament with both Under 8 and Under 10 teams for boys and girls.

The tournament kicked off in sunshine and the hosts won the first U8 game.

Teams from Allendale, Hexham, Prudhoe and Throckley took part and there was a choice of refreshments available for players and spectators.

There was also a raffle with prizes donated from businesses throughout Allendale and Hexham that was run over both days.

There was a high standard of football and the games were all played in an excellent spirit.

The tournament was not even spoiled when the rain came down with the last two games still to be played.

Every player was awarded a medal for taking part and although teams from Throckley were the most successful in both age ranges, the real winner on the day was junior football.

The junior tournament was held by the club for the first time, but with its success it is hoped that it will become an annual feature at the end of the season.

The profits from this year's tournament will go towards the construction of the new changing rooms and clubhouse, which it is hoped will be completed by Easter 2009.

The sports club are looking to introduce girls' football and would be delighted to hear from any girls looking to play football regularly and also any people wanting to coach or help with the coaching of any team.
