IT went right down to the wire but Wark edged their low scoring, opening day fixture with 10-man Humshaugh II in Division Two of the West Tyne Cricket League.

Chasing just 96, they looked to be home and hosed as openers Greg McConnell (33) and Gordon Jeffrey (33) steered them well within touching distance of victory.

However, their dismissals brought about a huge collapse and, with Michael Arnup (3-32), Joe Johnson (3-23) and Gibson (2-11) all claiming wickets, the North Tyne side were looking in danger.

It took a last man stand between Ryan Potts (9*) and stalwart Edward Jeffrey (4*) to find the required runs in the 32nd over.

The bowling of Simon Jeffrey (5-41) and opener Paul Armstrong (2-12) had put Wark in a commanding position, but useful contributions from Mullen (25) and Gibson (44*) saw Humshaugh put together more of a challenge as they finally ended on 96.

Skittling Allendale II out for just 60 runs, Wylam II started the season with a big seven wicket victory.

Katherine Lamb (4-13) stole the show with the ball as she turned the screw with her seven-and-a-bit overs, while Rob Bergstrand (2-0) and Tony Parker (3-27) also impressed.

Allendale's order really couldn't get going with opener John Raglan (20) and Chris Welch (15) the only ones sticking around for any length of time.

Wylam pushed for the runs and reached their goal in 14 overs, despite the early run out of Andrew Purdie (3). Opener David Teasdale (13) and Philip Mostyn (15) put them on the right track, with four fours from Bergstrand (23*) guiding them over the line.

Matty Charteries (2-14) and J. Heppell (2-12) gave Haltwhistle early hope, but the unbeaten partnership of Jonny Hedley (26*) and Matty Fenwick (28*) saw them win it in the 25th over.

South Northumberland 1864 started their campaign with a thumping 136 run triumph at Stocksfield IV .

While Dan Taylor (3-43) claimed three wickets and Aaron Rourke (2-50) two for Stocksfield, runs came too easy for South North with Ben Sidney Wilmot (67) leading the way with a half ton.

There were also good knocks from Alan Fletcher (23), Owen Hollins (33), James Moon (20) and Matty Jennings (25*), as they finished on 194-7.

Stocksfield's batting order found the going much tougher, particularly as Hollins (5-11) was in fine form to help restrict the hosts to 58 runs.

While the rest of the order failed to get going, Elliott Jackson (15), Anthony Watson (13), Sam Douglas (12) and Luke Masters (10) all made double figures for the home side.

The bragging rights belong to Mitford A after they crushed club counterparts Mitford B by 119 runs.

The A team were guided on the right path by good opening knocks from Chris Kirtley (35) and Matthew Ellinor (49), who just missed a season opening half century by being caught at square leg on by Michael Briggs off the impressive bowling of young debutant Max Barakat (2-19).

Mitford A were all out for 173 and the response from the second team was steady enough with opener Stephen Jones top scoring with 15.

Mitford first's new bowling attack seemed too strong as they removed their opponents for a disappointing total of 54, Kieran Mole (3-13), Dan Tuite (3-9) and Nick Gaynor (3-12) giving little away.
