TYNEDALE lost out to old rivals Ashington in a low scoring affair.

They nearly rescued a poor batting display as they tried to defend just 76, but hosts Ashington managed to scrape by with three wickets in hand after 27 overs.

Tyne skipper Tom Cant elected to bat first after winning the toss, and openers Connor Fellowes (4) and John Meadows (11) got them off to a slow but steady start.

They edged their way to 18 before Meadows was clean bowled by Callum Storey (2-33).

His dismissal brought about a bit of a wobble in the innings with the usually reliable Cant going for a five ball duck to Storey.

Fellowes was to follow soon after, going for four after 20 deliveries when he received a good one from Stephen Boyd (3-15).

James Rainford (7) was next to go to Boyd, and Jamie Crichton‘s (17) departure to give Storey his third wicket saw Tynedale struggling on 50-5.

That immediately became 50-6 when Callum Barnes (6) was caught by Greg Williams off Anirudh Singh (2-15).

Teenagers Josh Renton (11) and Will Dagg (13) formed a top scoring partnership of 20 but their partnership was ended when Renton was bowled by Singh.

From 70-6, Tynedale were all out for just 76 as Aussie Curtis Lucas (0) gave a catch to Matthew Storey off Paul Rutherford (2-5), Edward Pinches (1) was run out by Neil Wood and Dagg was lbw to Rutherford. Richard Brooks scored a single off his nine deliveries as Tyne were all out in the 34th over.

Singh (17) got Ashington’s reply off to a rapid start as he hit his side to 22 before losing opening partner Wood (3), lbw to Cant (3-22). Jack Jessop was unable to score as he was soon trapped by Cant, while Singh was caught by Meadows off Barnes (4-23) as Ashington struggled to 26-3.

Ben O‘Brien (6) and Daniel Grant (13) steadied things to move them to 39, but O’Brien was lbw to Barnes and Grant caught behind by Crichton off Cant. The home side passed the 50 mark with Greg Williams (9) and Matthew Storey (2) at the crease, but they both became victims to Barnes with the score on 66-7.

Tynedale sensed victory but were unable to remove Boyd (14no) and Michael Thewlis (5no) as Ashington picked up 20 points and the visitors only three.

Tynedale II edged out Ashington II in another close affair, finding the winning runs with two wickets left.

Ashington were all out for 125, David Newton (2-18), Mark Clark (4-37), Dorian Hiles (3-24) and Matthew Percival (1-5) with the wickets.

Tyne were put in a good position by knocks from Michael Watts (25), Percival (26) and Newton (23), with Dorian Hiles‘ (15no) hit at the end helping them tick off the required runs.
