LATE partnerships between Tynedale’s teenagers earned them a slender one wicket victory over newly promoted Newcastle City.

In a nail biting finish, Dale Leadbitter combined with fellow teens Josh Renton and then Richard Brooks to edge his side to glory.

In a reduced game to 40 overs, Callum Barnes opened for Tynedale’s reply after a fantastic 5-31 with the ball proved pivotal.

Newcastle were in bat first and Mukhtar stood tall against Tynedale’s attack, defying all the bowlers for 42 well made runs.

His well placed singles and twos to all parts of the ground set his team off on the right path, although wickets around him tumbled as theyfinished on 120-8.

Tynedale looked in trouble as they slumped to 55-5, debutant Sam Mannion (3) lbw to Sohail in the 21st over.

Sohail finished with remarkable figures of 3-6 off nine overs including five maidens, as he put his sit in control.

Newcastle had their chances but missed many, Will Dagg let off a stumping and Leadbitter dropped in 29th over.

Brooks, meanwhile, got a leading edge that went down at midwicket with the scores level, meaning Newcastle just needed the final wicket for victory.

To add to the drama, there was some extraordinary and voiceferous appealing, verging on hostile, not least for a caught behind chance moments before against Brooks.

It was Leadbitter who pushed a single wide of mid-on to clinch the win for Tynedale, who all breathed a huge sigh of relief 34.3 overs of exciting play.

Playing big parts in the victory was the young trio of Renton, Leadbitter and Brooks as they held their nerves even if they did ride their luck at times against the fast bowling of Stubbs and legspin of Ulhaq near the end.

Up against it though, Leadbitter and Brooks both smacked two huge sixes with one of them flying past the pavilion as they showed great attacking spirit.

Tynedale’s cause was also helped with the scoring of 24 extras, boosting the away side’s total as they conceded just 10.

Up next for Tynedale is a home game with Ashington on Saturday, with the respective second teams swapping venues in Division B1.

Tynedale II started with a seven wicket victory over Newcastle City II, Ben Griffiths (63) and Andy Percival (53) big scorers.
