THE Spartans of Stocksfield were triumphant as they hosted the Northumberland U19 Twenty20 finals day.

A great performance in the final saw them overcome Alnmouth, their final total of 118-7 being 31 more than what their opponents could reply with.

To make the final, Stocksfield Spartans defeated Tillside by a comprehensive margin of 106 runs.

Captain Sam Beedle and Luke Doneathy both scored 53 runs to take the score to 189-7 after 20 overs, with Matty Scandle finishing with excellent figures of 4-8 as Tillside finished on 83-8.

As a result of Alnmouth's narrow two run success over Benwell Hill, they went through to meet Stocksfield in the final. They posted 107-6, with Benwell recording 105-6.

After a slow start to the final, a brilliant partnership from Doneathy and Rob Thirlwell dragged the Spartans to a good total of 118-7. Thirlwell reached his 50, with Doneathy ending on 40.

Alnmouth's Ed Brunton, who had scored 50 in the semi-finals, made his way to 33, but the victory belonged to Stocksfield as they added an efficient team performance in the field to their batting display.

The highlights of the innings saw James Doneathy take three wickets for just eight runs, while rapid wicketkeeper Sam Beedle pulled off a truly remarkable diving catch off Chris Scandle's bowling.

It was then over to Beedle to collect the trophy on behalf of his team, receiving the prize from Ben Cuthbertson, the cricket development officer for Central Northumberland within the Northumberland Cricket Board.
