A SOLID, unbeaten 50 from 16-year-old Marcus Sewell earned Corbridge a much needed victory over Warkworth.

After a run of poor results, the 64-run victory, just their second of the campaign, moved them out of the bottom two, at the expense of their visitors.

The half century from Sewell played a big role in securing the valuable 28 points, as did some hostile bowling from Zubair Ahmed and captain Andy Dover.

Attracting attention from guests at the neighbouring Tynedale Beer Festival, Corbridge’s innings got off to a good start through openers David Cook and Dave Smurthwaite.

The former was particularly attacking as they made 52, Smurthwaite departing when caught by Liam Haney off the bowling of Ian Clough.

Warkworth’s XI featured Mattie Thompson who left the Stanners in the summer, and he contributed in removing Cook as he caught his former teammate to give Clough his second wicket while Haney got in on the act with the wicket of Chris Fowler.

Warkworth’s momentum was foiled by teenager Sewell, though, and he dug in to pass 50 and help Corbridge move past 150.

He had to see off some good bowling with Haney, Clough and William Pringle all in the wickets, yet Sewell kept plugging away.

His batting partners didn’t fare as well though, Dover the only other batsman to reach double figures with Ahmed keeping him company as the overs ran dry.

Ahmed didn’t waste any time in getting the breakthrough for Corbridge, trapping Clough lbw for a duck with the score on five to bring Thompson back to a familiar place at the Stanners crease.

While Ahmed struck to see Scott Gibson and Chris Glass both caught, by Sewell and Fowler, Thompson put up good resistance and batted on until judged leg before from a Dean Robinson delivery.

The usually dangerous Haney was run out before he could really get going as Sewell capped a great day personally, with Russell Perry accounting for Adam Hall. It was then over to captain Dover to ensure the victory, demolishing the Warkworth tail as he claimed four wickets at the cost of just seven runs from his 19 balls.

Alistair Gibson and Pringle both went for ducks, seeing Warkworth all out on 94 in the 35th over.
