LOOKING like an impossibility when the flood waters hit in December, Corbridge Cricket Club will start the season at their pitch at the Stanners this weekend.

The damage inflicted by Storm Desmond has wiped out the clubhouse, with the estimated cost of a new structure at a staggering £100,000.

The changing pavilion and square also suffered but, with thanks to a wonderful community effort, the first team are able to welcome Ashington Rugby Club as the Northumberland Cricket League kicks off on Saturday.

Secretary Michael Robinson said: “The clubhouse needs to be demolished and will be this year, but we will be up-and-running for the weekend.

“The target is to get the new clubhouse here for the 2017 season, but we’ve space in the pavilion for a temporary one.”

The off-field developments won’t be allowed to be used as an excuse for distraction on the pitch, as both senior teams are expected to be competitive in their respective divisions.

Long serving player Andy Dover comes in to captain the side to take over from Chris Fowler, who will continue to play but has stepped down from the role for work and family commitments.

Former Tynemouth player Russell Perry, known throughout the North-East in his role as chairman of Northumberland Cricket Board, has joined the ranks and will be a very strong addition.

Corbridge also welcome back Chris Darling for a second time in two years, fully recovered after breaking his collarbone in a cycling accident during his return to the Stanners last year.

There will be a couple of notable absentees from action though with stalwart David Hardy hanging up his spikes, while last season’s addition Michael Kirchener has returned to his native Australia.

They will also be without Mattie Thompson until the football season finishes due to his commitments as manager of Prudhoe Town.
