A MISSED catch by Sam Mannion in the last ball of the penultimate over allowed Consett to inflict defeat on Tynedale.

With the visitors needing nine runs for victory with seven balls remaining, the in-form Dan Milligan sent a ball to Mannion at backward point but watched on relieved as the ball sailed through his hands.

The miss presented Milligan with a get out of jail free card, and he hit a four then a six from the final over to start the away team’s celebrations.

It brought an end to an innings which had seen Tynedale claw their way back against a fierce onslaught of stroke play from Consett openers Kamran Mansoor and Gary Hunter.

The pair put the ball to all pats of the ground as they made 50 within nine overs, putting on 72 before Mansoor was trapped lbw by Tom Cant.

Hunter had already survived a caught behind appeal, but his time was up when the pace bowling of Curtis Lucas saw him edge one to keeper Jamie Crichton just short of his 50 with the score on 114-2.

Andrew Waters followed soon after when he was caught by Noah Hiles, again off Lucas.

Callum Barnes’ spin caused all sorts of problems and he earned three wickets with spells at both ends, trapping Abhiram Joshi with the score on 130 then having Robbie Winn and John Chapman caught out in the deep. Paul Ringer fell when he was bowled by Patrick Matautaava.

Milligan and Andrew Forster were paired at the crease, and they put on a match-winning, eighth wicket stand of 50 plus runs to earn Consett the victory.

They had to chase a good total of more than 200 as Tynedale provided some partnerships of their own, openers Mannion and Crichton doing well to put on 47.

They handled opening bowlers Mark Dixon and Hunter well until Crichton edged the ball straight to Hunter at first slip off Dixon.

Cant came in and they had put on 30 when he was dropped by Mansoor, the captain recovering his composure to tick the scoreboard on. He and Mannion were running well between the wickets but the latter met his match when bowled by Milligan.

Matautaava and Cant added 50 runs with the pro more reserved after being dropped, but he succumbed after facing 32 balls with the score on 150-3.

Tynedale encountered a wobble after losing Cant, James Rainford, Noah Hiles and Barnes all departing in quick succession. The wickets continued to fall and Will Dagg was caught with just nine further runs added.

The innings ended on a positive note with Josh Renton and Ross Sinclair sticking in, but the total they achieved was exceeded by their opponents with the late drama.
