SAM Mannion’s crowning moment for Tynedale was overshadowed somewhat by the exploits of Percy Main opener David Anderson.

The teenager recorded his first century since signing for the Hexham club from Stocksfield at the beginning of 2016, but he still ended up on the losing side after Anderson’s star role for the visitors.

Showing all his experience, Anderson batted throughout the Percy innings to remain unbeaten on 123 as he feasted on runs. Yet Mannion’s maiden ton was one of the most eye-catching innings of recent years at Prior’s Flat though the classical and natural timing of his shots, especially cover drives and straight-forward lofts to the boundary.

He led from the front to put Tyne in with a shout, hitting 13 fours during his two hour plus stay in the middle. However, the boundaries crucially ran out towards the end of his knock, before he was caught out.

Percy Main, batting first, quickly racked up the runs as they passed the 250 mark against a Tynedale side without Dale Leadbitter and Euan Stephenson, leading to promotions from the second team for Sam Peter and James Percival.

The latter’s call-up meant Tyne had three sets of players in the starting XI; James joining sibling Matthew to go with the Rentons (Hedley and Josh) and the Newtons (David and Paul).

Anderson was Percy’s main man as he his innings contained 13 fours and three sixes, his knock a chanceless one except for a solitary edge which hurtled through where a first slip might have stood. His teammates tried to play around him, and it took a change of bowling from Tyne captain Tom Cant to get the breakthrough when youngster Peter replaced Josh Renton, and his accuracy saw off Anthony Hornby in his first over.

Will Taylor replaced Hornby and put on 65 for the second wicket with Anderson, taking the score to 107 before he was trapped leg before by Paul Newton.

Former Tyne man Michael Phillips began to hit out in the scorching sun, making 35 from 44 balls before the returning Matthew Percival sent his stumps flying.

Barry Stewart then came in and whacked his way to a quick 33 from 27 deliveries, Anderson passing 100 at the other end to put Percy Main in a great position.

Jamie Crichton and Mannion set off eagerly in reply and they got to 55 before Crichton, playing back to left arm spinner Taylor, was trapped lbw.

But Tynedale were up with the run rate, making it to 103 before the second wicket fell with Cant, having played a succulent extra cover drive for four, was caught by Taylor at extra cover after being tempted to hit the same shot by Michael Boyd.

James Rainford and Mannion proved the hosts’ most productive pair as they put on 82, Rainford passing 3,000 league runs for the team, only the 20th player to pass the total, as he recorded his second 50 of 2017. With a minimum of fuss, he hit eight fours to move Tynedale on before former Allendale player Amit Sunda had him lbw in the 41st over.

The wicket gave Percy the impetus, and Sunda built on this as he ripped through the middle order with a further four wickets.

Josh Renton was bowled with the score on 216-4, with Taylor then catching both Paul Newton and Hedley Renton. Sunda’s spell then saw off the fight from Mannion as the teen’s long vigil finally came to an end, a mis-hit flying to Anderson to ensure the points belonged to Percy.
