A POOR batting display cost Tynedale as they lost by seven wickets at home to Ashington.

While it was their young batsmen who saw them edge to a narrow victory the week before, a lack of patience throughout the order saw them post just 107 for their guests to chase.

Ashington captain Greg Williams wouldn’t have ever predicted such a straight forward game when he won the toss and elected to field first, his bowling attack rarely tested as Tyne bowed out by the 36th over.

The flight of Paul Rutherford’s (4-30) left arm bowling and Anirudh Singh’s (2-28) slow balls inflicted most of the damage, as Tynedale lost four wickets without scoring midway through the order.

They started well enough as Jamie Crichton (33) and Tom Cant (20) pushed the score along nicely after opener Connor Fellowes (2) was caught behind by Jack McCarthy off Ben Harmison (1-19) after 31 deliveries faced.

After a rushed start to his innings, Crichton pulled it back round and punished anything to leg. He helped take Tynedale to 50 in the 15th over but was out due to a bizarre incident which saw the ball hit his flailing left pad and then trickle along the ground before a bail fell from the stumps for a hit wicket decision.

Cant didn’t last much longer as he was stumped by McCarthy off Rutherford, while James Rainford (7), having survived a dropped catch at slip with just a single run to his name, succumbed lbw to Rutherford to leave them on 63-4.

Sam Mannion came in and hit a six and four on his way to making 11 but he attempted one big shot too many as he was caught at deep square leg.

With Tynedale struggling along on 79-5, they faced a collapse as Callum Barnes (5), Will Dagg (0), Josh Renton (5) and Dale Leadbitter (0) all went cheaply to leave them in trouble on 79-8.

At the bottom of the order, Ross Sinclair (6) and Curtis Lucas (17*) made a fight of it as they brought up the collective 100, but Sinclair’s dismissal to a catch by Harmison off the returning Callum Storey (2-30) spelled the end.

The opening over of Ashington’s reply was an eventful one as, after opener Neil Wood (0) survived an lbw appeal first ball, Cant (1-15) had him clean bowled next ball for 0-1.

Jack Jessop (30) came in and hit two sweet drives and the final ball scuttled away for four byes as they ended the over at 12-1.

Singh (0) hasn’t enjoyed a good time facing Tynedale in recent years and that trend continued as he was lbw to Dagg (1-18) in the second over without scoring.

Captain Cant rallied his team as they made things difficult for the Ashington batsmen, but it was Jessop and Ben O’Brien (42*) who put the result beyond doubt.

Sinclair (1-20) had Jessop snared in the slips by Cant, yet O’Brien was joined by Sean McCafferty (25*) as Ashington got over the line in the 25th over.

Tynedale II turned the tables on Ashington’s second team as they won by 25 runs.

Openers Paul Scandle (37) and Michael Watts (25) set them up nicely, and a useful knock from Matthew Percival (23*) later in the order saw them to an innings total of 161-6.

Ashington were dismissed for 116 as David Newton (3-14) and Richard Brooks (3-19) stole the show, with Dorian Hiles (2-17) and Paul Newton (2-19) also in the wickets.
