HALTWHISTLE caused a huge shock in the Northumberland County Cup as they eliminated near neighbours Tynedale.

The West Tyne outfit defended a score of 139-8 from their 20 overs by a margin of 36 runs, sending their Northumberland and Tyneside League opponents packing at the first stage.

It was a huge scalp for underdogs Haltwhistle, but they put in a brilliant all-round performance to earn the big victory.

With Dan Parker putting his side into bat, he and opening partner Joe Barber got off to a good start with 41 for the first wicket. Barber was bowled by Josh Renton (1-24) for a quick 25, with Parker (31) and Dan Kirkup (26) building on the early momentum to push their team past 100.

Richard Brooks (2-12) and Sam Mannion (2-37) then got in on the act to help stem the flow, but Haltwhistle were to make their way to 139 with Mark Rowell (9), John Armstrong (4), Jonny Wallace (2), Phillip Thompson (2), Reece Thirtle (1), Michael Parker (10*) and Adam Haughton (5*) all facing the bowlers.

Matthew Percival (2-29) and Tom Cant (1-17) also claimed wickets for Tynedale.

The early loss of Jamie Cricthon (0) to Kirkup (1-20) had Tyne reeling in reply, but James Rainford (16) and Dale Leadbitter (29) getting the innings back on track. Leadbitter was in particular fluid form with his knock coming from 27 deliveries and including two sixes.

The breakthrough came as Rainford was caught by Barber off Thompson (1-28), with Haltwhistle gaining the upper hand as John Armstrong (2-21), Barber (2-8) and Rowell (2-15) all claimed two wickets.

Only Renton (13) reached double figures after Rainford and Leadbitter’s dismissal, Euan Stephenson (6), Cant (9), Mannion (8), Brooks (2), Percival (4), Ollie Fletcher (6*) and Sam Peter (4) not passing single figures.
