THE flood damaged clubhouse at Corbridge Cricket Club is no more.

For heavy machinery from local firm Thompson's of Prudhoe rolled into the Stanners to demolish the structure ahead of a complete rebuild in time for the 2017 cricket season.

The cricket club was stumped when the building was ruled out of action as a result of damage caused by the flood waters of Storm Desmond in December.

But now that it has been removed, committee members are excited about forging ahead with the project for a brand new clubhouse, at a projected cost of £150,000 all in.

Secretary Michael Robinson said: "Thompson's of Prudhoe ripped the building apart and it's all gone now.

"I have been around at the club since the 1960s so it was a bit sad to see the building go as we've had a lot of good times in there, and there's a lot of memories of the place.

"But life goes on and we are looking at this as an opportunity to consolidate the club's life for the next 100 years, long after we have all disappeared.

"If the wooden building lasted 55 years, hopefully what we are going to put up will last a hell of a lot longer!"

At this stage, no real plans have been drawn up for the new clubhouse although the committee has agreed it wants the structure to be raised to prevent water damage in any future floods.

The club is to work closely with the England Cricket Board and Sport England on the project.
