AN ELECTRIC bowling performance from Tynedale saw them wipe out Ponteland for just 83 runs.

No home batsman reached 20 runs as Tynedale’s attack excelled, paving the way for a rapid fire, match-winning second wicket stand between Jamie Crichton and Patrick Matautaava (right) in reply.

Pont’s opening pair John Lumb and Ryan Gerrard were under constant pressure from Ross Sinclair and Curtis Lucas, Sinclair immediately getting the ball moving and Lucas running in seven overs at a cost of less than two runs per six balls despite ending with no reward.

The openers lasted just over an hour at the crease but couldn’t get the scoreboard ticking, Ponteland not posting a team 50 until the 28th over. By that time, six wickets had fallen.

It was change bowlers Will Dagg and Matthew Percival who cranked up the heat and between them claimed six wickets with just 14 runs conceded.

Captain Tom Cant, who replaced Sinclair, brought about the breakthrough by having Lumb lbw in the 17th over with the score on 33, the remaining nine wickets falling for just 50 runs.

Dagg claimed the next two wickets in quick succession, with Cant getting back in the action to see Ponteland to 43-4.

Teenager Dagg claimed his third victim to an outstanding catch at second slip by Matautaava, before Cant got his third by claiming Thomas Reeman for a duck.

Pont captain Jonathan Appleby and John Gardner put on 21 for the seventh wicket, until Percival was introduced to force Gardner to loft one towards the long-on boundary only to be caught out by a diving catch by Cant.

Sinclair returned to claim his first wicket but it was over to Percival to clean up as he finished a fantastic spell of bowling with the final two wickets. Tynedale might have thought they were going to throw it away when Sam Mannion chipped his shot into the arms of Liam Cosgrove off Gardner off the first ball of the reply.

In came Matautaava to partner Jamie Crichton, and the pro quickly racked up the runs with two fours coming in the opening over swiftly followed by another two in the second.

At the other end, Crichton decided to be on the offensive and hit five fours on his way to an unbeaten 26. But it was the Vanuatuan international who guided his team to victory within 41 minutes, making his sixth 50 for the Hexham side as he hit a boundary to seal the game, his 11th of the afternoon from the 34 balls faced.
