THERE was a rousing standing ovation out of respect for the great work the late Dennis Sparke did for Allendale Cricket Club.

A stalwart at the Riding Haugh club with seven decades of service as a cricketer, the well-liked volunteer was posthumously awarded the Chairman’s Trophy by Michael Baker.

In August, Dennis, who played up until a few years ago, died aged 79 following a short illness.

He and his wife Valerie were passionate promoters of sport in the Allen Valleys, and his two sons Terry and Geoff have a long association with the club too.

He supported the club right up until his death, and his loyal service was recognised by the award from the West Tyne chairman.

Mr Baker said: “Those old enough will remember him as a bat of not brilliant ability, but very stubborn! He bowled a unique but effective style, but must of all he was a dedicated club man. “He offered financial assistance, helped out with the ground and he even helped out his wife Valerie doing the cricket teas.

“I umpired the Allendale game with Dickie Purvis the day after his funeral and had a long chat with his son Terry who had come back from Australia and was obviously very devastated. He said it will be a strange game because Dennis wasn’t standing on the bank and wasn’t there watching, and he had been to every game he and Geoff had played ever since they were juniors.”
