IT’S full steam ahead as work on Corbridge Cricket Club’s new pavilion started this week.

After the club lost their former one to the floods in December 2015, they have pooled resources for a state-of-the-art, glass fronted structure raised 1.5 metres on stilts to protect it from any future flooding.

Committee members have been working with Riding Mill-based firm INArchitecture on plans for the new build, and were delighted this week when Joyce Construction and Civils, of nearby Dilston, brought the diggers in to start work on the development.

It is estimated the pavilion will be finished in time for the start of the 2017 season in April.

Club president Chris Roberts said: “The club is more than 130 years old and local companies are building us something that will last well into the future.

“We will have a good, strong building for cricketers in the village of Corbridge, and anybody who wants to use it.

“What will be great about the new building is that we will have facilities, not just for the cricket club, but for events and functions in the village.

“We are still doing some fund-raising for the fitting out, but we hope that everything will be ready for the new season, or just about.”
