CORBRIDGE cricketers will join their counterparts from Hexham on the trip down to Bolton.

Corbridge Middle School’s Year 7 girls’ team booked their place in the Northern final of the Lady Taverners U13 Championships, overcoming a tough challenge from Ponteland Middle with just two balls to spare.

They will head down to Bolton alongside Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School, the winners of the U15 competition.

With Valley Garden, Tweedmouth, Gosforth Central, Ovingham, Ponteland and Corbridge contesting the Northumberland finals, the latter two made the semi-finals as group winners.

Corbridge defeated Valley Gardens to make the final, with Ponteland beating Gosforth.

The final was a nail-biter with defending champions Ponteland getting off to a good start as they batted first, finishing on a tidy 93-3 from their eight overs.

Corbridge started their chase well but some good bowling from Ponteland made things tricky midway through the innings.

However, Corbridge dug in deep to find the required runs right at the death.
