A LATE batting collapse saw Corbridge fall to defeat on their travels to Ashington Rugby.

The team went from 92-4 to 107 all out as they were unable to build on last week’s victory over Blue Flames.

David Smurthwaite and David Cox got Corbridge off to a steady start as they elected to bat first, and their partnership was going along nicely until it ended with the score on 23.

Russell Perry went to a duck when caught by Cory Milburn off the bowling of Dean Greaves, but Marcus Sewell continued his good form with the bat as he and Simon Walker ticked the scoreboard on.

However, disaster struck with the score on 92 and the loss of the final six wickets for just 15 runs prevented Corbridge from posting a challenging total. David Dent struck for Ashington and his teammates helped him out to make sure the total posted by their visitors was well within reach.

With Lewis Tanney claiming four wickets, Dean Robinson, Andy Dover, John Maude, Chris Roberts and David Swan weren’t able to make their marks with the bat. Trevor Elliott also contributed with the ball with two wickets.

Youngster Corey Dover was the last man standing when the innings came to an end after 35 overs.

Corbridge would have thought they stood a good chance with two wickets in quick succession seeing the hosts to 22-2.

After Perry removed opener David Dent, captain Andy Dover had Adam Peacock caught by Robinson to put Corbridge in a good position.

However, Ashington skipper Chris Harwood was batting well and formed a great third wicket stand with Callum Milburn as they took the game to Corbridge with a 60-run partnership.

Milburn was the next to depart to a catch from Corey Dover off Cox with the score on 85-3, with Tanney going soon after to give 13-year-old Dover jnr his first wicket.

He struck again soon after to deny danger man Harwood his half century, the home captain caught by Cox just one run shy after hitting eight fours.

However, Harwood had already inflicted the damage and Matthew Tanney and Andrew Storey saw out the game with ease to see the home side to maximum points.

Corbridge face a tricky task at the weekend as they entertain current leaders Backworth at The Stanners, their guests bouncing back from their opening day defeat to Blagdon Park to record three consecutive victories.
